Those of you who know me in person, know that I have two defining characteristics: I’m extremely preppy.
And extremely nerdy.
Yes, it’s true. As unprep as it is, I am one to get excited about particular video games releases or wait every month to by the next issues of all my favorite titles from the comic book store. It’s simply a part of who I am.
This aspect of my life has inspired me to present a new collection called “preppy nerds”. In it, I shall highlight, usually fictional characters from the nerdy medias, which embody prep. Starting with Captain America.
Captain America is preppy because, well– Any blonde-haired blue-eyed good lookin’ guy who runs around fighting terrorists in the name of his country and represents 100% true American patriotism is going to be somewhat preppy.
Born Steve Rogers in 1922, at the height of WWII he is selected for a special government program to be the first of a line of super soldiers to combat the likes of Adolf Hitler. Together with young ally Bucky Barnes, the Cap tours the country side fighting Nazis as well as evil agent the Red Skull. Later, he is frozen only to reappear years later, continuing his quest against anything that threatens America and it’s allies.
While the Cap’s personality may differ depending on who is writing the issues, it is clear that he has a huge presence in the comic book community, and indeed the world over. Sure, he may appear to be a silly super hero dressed in red, white, and blue, but it is because he is so patriotic that he is loved. Cap is an All-American icon, and as such, very preppy.
You can catch the Captain in Captain America: The First Avenger or the upcoming Avengers movie.
